Maximising your DIY video content with 3 basic techniques

3 Easy Steps to Enhance and Improve Your Video

Mastering framing with the rule of thirds

The rule of thirds is the cornerstone of composition in photography and videography. This technique involves dividing your frame into a grid of nine equal segments to help position your subject in a way that’s visually appealing. You can easily activate this grid in your smartphone camera settings.

For a ‘one subject’ frame where the individual is looking straight at the camera, centering your subject with enough headspace will give you a balanced and clean look. Avoid cutting off the top of the head or leaving too much space above, as this can distract viewers.

When interviewing someone, another option is to position them off-centre, aligning them with one of the vertical lines on your grid. This setup allows the interviewee’s line of sight to be directed towards the interviewer, creating a natural and engaging conversation flow.

Ensuring a straight horizon and eye-level perspective

A straight horizon and maintaining the camera at eye level are absolutely crucial for a polished look. Use environmental cues, like the edges of buildings or furniture, to align the shot with your grid. Tilted angles can unintentionally distort your subject’s features, instead of enhancing them.

For most scenarios, aligning the centre of your lens with the subject’s eye line guarantees a flattering and neutral angle, so we’d suggest playing it safe with a simple perspective.

Adding depth for a cinematic feel

A plain background offers clarity and focus on your subject, but adding depth can dramatically enhance your video’s professional quality. Make sure there’s ample space between your subject and the background to create a sense of depth, separating them visually from their surroundings.

For an even more professional look, consider positioning your subject in an environment where background elements add to the narrative or aesthetic of your frame. This not only adds depth but also enriches the story you’re telling through your video.

Making the Most of What You Have

Creating impactful video content lies in understanding and applying basic filming principles, not necessarily in owning the most advanced equipment.

Remember, the best camera is the one you have with you. It’s how you use it, along with some foundational techniques, that will make great video content. Have any questions about brand video production? Feel free to drop us a message
